It is extremely common for new puppies to bite and nip their new owner and as such it is usually the first problem a new owner will have to overcome. Nearly all new puppies take part in this behaviour, which is hard wired to its brain, but as a family pet it is a behaviour that needs to be controlled. To stop puppy biting becoming a problem for you there are some very simple tactics that will stop the danger in its track before it can get out of hand. Puppies bite for a reason, so realising why they do it is the first step to overcoming the problem.

**Puppy Biting – Why They Do It**
The reasons why puppies bite are varied and need various responses so it is essential that you know which is the cause of the biting.

The puppy is playing.
Curiosity.
To dominate.
Overstimulation.
Fear.
The herding instinct.
Growing pains.
Feed me.

Different puppies bite for different reasons and this article is not long enough to advise on them all, We are concentrating on the most common reason here along with general good practice that will probably deal with any puppy biting, whatever the underlying reason. The most experienced reason for puppy biting is play biting.

**Dealing With Puppy Biting**
Coming up are the surefire ways to stop a new puppy from making a meal of you and the family, but, consistency is the key to success. All the family need to be aware of the approach being taken to control the puppy nipping, kids especially, there should be no time that the rules don’t apply. Follow this simple consistency rule and your puppy can learn to stop biting in a matter fo hours depending on their intelligence.

Let puppy know.
When puppies play and one bites the other too hard the bitten one will let out a yelp and stop playing for a minute, the offender immediately backs away knowing they have done wrong, after a few moments play begins again, we should mimic this by giving a loud Ouch when bitten and immediately stop playing, usually after a short time your puppy will approach you to make up. When puppy knows you should either continue the play and repeat the process every time puppy bites, do this with everyone who gets bitten and puppy will stop almost immediately to every ones benefit.

Puppy Biting Tips

1. Play with other dogs.
2. Have chewable toys that belong to your puppy.
