How To Care For Your Betta Fish
If you have just bought some betta fish or are planning on it then you should understand how best to look after this great species. Like other fish species, bettas have their own unique needs and if you adhere to them then you will enjoy well behaved and long living fish.
Other Fish
As their other name (Siamese fighting fish) suggests, these kind of fish have to be segregated appropriately.
Male bettas have to be separated or else they are going to fight. Females can also fight but are much less popular as breeders have not yet worked out just how to obtain the amazing appearance which the males have.
If you would like to get a pair of males but do not want the expense and hassle of two aquariums you may buy special separated fish tanks which will keep the two fish safely apart from one another.
Do not place small fish inside the same tank as bettas or else they will be eaten.
Sufficient Tank Sizing
You will need at least a 2 gallon aquarium and preferable bigger to support a single betta.
It’s a common myth that bettas like smaller sized environments. This has occured since pet stores must segregate them and only have so much rack real estate. They can certainly endure in smaller environments however they will enjoy a reduced quality of life.
Water Temperature
Bettas are tropical fish and therefore should be kept in warm conditions. An air conditioned place is frequently too cold for bettas so watch out for this.
The water temp should be kept at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, give or take a few degrees either way. If you believe that preserving this temperature will be a problem then you really should invest in a thermostatically controlled heating unit for your aquarium.
Cleaning
Make sure you thoroughly clean your fish tank on a regular basis, around once every seven days.
Leave the fish inside the fish tank and scoop up the debris on the bottom and sides of the aquarium. A turkey baster is actually handy for collecting debris from the bottom of the fish tank.
You also have to exchange some of the water. I suggest draining out around one fourth of the water, once every seven days. Change it out with water at room temperatures (75 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit). Don’t add cool water or you’ll distress your fish.
Food
Feeding bettas is fairly easy. They’re carnivorous and your community pet store should have pellets or dried out bloodworms that they’re able to feed on.
